Orthodontic Retention

Learn how custom fixed and removable retainers help maintain your smile after orthodontic treatment.

Why retention matters after orthodontic treatment

Retention begins after active treatment with braces or clear aligners. Teeth can continue to shift throughout life, so retainers help support the positions achieved during treatment. Dr. Golnaz Kavand will recommend a retention plan based on your teeth, bite, and treatment history.

Fixed and removable retainers

A removable retainer can be taken out for eating and cleaning. A fixed retainer is bonded behind selected teeth and remains in place until an orthodontist recommends removing or replacing it. Some patients may use one type or a combination of both.

Wearing and caring for your retainer

Wear your retainer according to Dr. Kavand’s instructions. Clean it using the method recommended for that retainer, store removable retainers in their case when they are not being worn, and keep them away from heat and pets. Fixed retainers require careful brushing and cleaning around the bonded wire.

What to do if your retainer is lost, broken, or does not fit

Contact Atlantis promptly if a retainer is lost, damaged, feels painful, or no longer seats properly. Do not force a retainer into place or attempt to repair or adjust it yourself. The orthodontic team can advise whether it should be checked, repaired, or replaced.
