• ~Jaw Surgery›

  For some patients, orthodontic treatment may be part of a treatment plan that also involves corrective jaw surgery, also called orthognathic surgery. Atlantis provides orthodontic care for patients whose treatment involves jaw surgery and coordinates orthodontic treatment planning with an outside oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

  The oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs the actual surgery. Jaw surgery is not performed at Atlantis.

• ~Orthodontic Retention›

  Retention begins after braces are removed and is essential for maintaining the new position of your teeth. Because teeth can shift without support, Dr. Kavand may recommend a custom fixed or removable retainer based on your individual needs.

  Removable retainers should be worn for the recommended amount of time and taken out for brushing. Retainers should also be cleaned before being placed back in the mouth. If a retainer breaks, contact the office instead of trying to repair or adjust it yourself.

  Cavities should be treated promptly to protect your child’s oral health and prevent decay from progressing. Pediatric dental fillings restore teeth affected by cavities so your child can return to a healthy, comfortable smile.

  Dental sealants are thin, clear or tooth-colored resin coatings that add protection to the chewing surfaces of teeth. They form a barrier that helps keep food particles and bacteria out of deep grooves, reducing the risk of cavities and making brushing more effective. Sealants are commonly recommended after permanent teeth begin to appear, often between ages 6 and 12. They support—but do not replace—daily brushing, flossing, and regular checkups.

Although children receive fluoride through foods, water, and many toothpastes, a professional treatment can provide additional support—especially for children who develop cavities frequently.

  During an exam, our pediatric team can assess whether fluoride would benefit your child. Treatment is quick and may be applied to the teeth as a varnish, foam, or gel.
