Golnaz Kavand, DMD

Board-Certified Orthodontist

Dr. Kavand has worked in multiple private practices in Ohio and Southern California and is excited to bring her expertise to serve patients in the Bay Area.

Dr. Golnaz Kavand obtained her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from Boston University with High Honors. Following that, she moved to the Midwest and obtained a Master of Science in Dentistry and a clinical certificate in Orthodontics from Indiana University. During residency, Dr. Kavand studied the impact of palatal expansion on upper airway volume and published the results of her study in the prestigious journal, The Angle Orthodontist. In addition, Dr. Kavand has a Master’s in Dental Public Health from The University of Iowa, with a focus on the dental esthetic perception in young adolescents and their parents.

Dr. Kavand has worked in multiple private practices in Ohio and Southern California and is excited to bring her expertise to serve patients in the Bay Area. Dr. Kavand is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and an active member of both the American and the California Association of Orthodontists.

Outside of the office, Dr. Kavand spends time with her husband and her toddler, Lillian.

Keerthi Golla, DMD

Pediatric Dentist

Dr. Golla is passionate about helping children build a lifetime of excellent oral health. She values establishing a dental home early, watching her patients grow, teaching strong oral-care habits, and helping children feel more at ease during dental visits.

Dr. Keerthi Golla grew up on the East Coast and is delighted to be part of the Atlantis team. After moving to the Monterey Bay area with her family, she came to love Northern California and all it has to offer.

She attended the University of Pennsylvania before earning her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed a general dentistry residency at the University of Illinois Chicago. After practicing general dentistry and discovering how much she enjoyed caring for children, she pursued specialty training in pediatric dentistry at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.

Outside the office, Dr. Golla enjoys time with her family and friends, reading, walking, discovering new places and restaurants, and keeping up with her twin daughters. She looks forward to meeting you and your child.

Common Orthodontic Problems

Our team treats a variety of bite and alignment concerns to improve the health, function, and appearance of your smile.

Overbite: The upper front teeth extend over the lower front teeth and may cause the lower teeth to contact the roof of the mouth.

Underbite: The lower jaw extends forward, placing the lower front teeth ahead of the upper front teeth.

Open bite: The upper and lower front teeth do not overlap, which may interfere with chewing and contribute to habits such as tongue thrusting.

Crossbite: One or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, which can affect tooth wear and jaw growth.

Upper front teeth protrusion: The upper teeth extend too far forward, or the lower teeth do not extend far enough, affecting appearance and function.

Dental midlines not matched: The centers of the upper and lower teeth do not align, often because the back bite does not fit correctly.

First Orthodontic Visit

Your initial visit typically lasts about 30 minutes and includes a thorough examination and discussion of your treatment options. We may also reserve time for diagnostic records—including photographs, X-rays, and impressions used to develop your personalized treatment plan. The records appointment takes about one hour.

This is a good time to ask what orthodontics can address, which treatment may be appropriate, whether treatment should begin now or later, whether teeth may need to be removed, how long treatment may take, and what the cost and payment options may be.

After reviewing your diagnostic records, we will discuss treatment recommendations, timing, and financial arrangements. Please bring any panoramic X-rays taken within the previous six months and your orthodontic insurance card, if applicable.

Impacted Teeth Information

An impacted tooth remains trapped in the bone or gum tissue instead of erupting normally. Wisdom teeth are the most commonly impacted teeth, often because there is not enough room in the dental arch. Untreated impacted teeth may become painful, infected, swollen, or vulnerable to decay. Our practice does not remove impacted wisdom teeth, but we can provide a referral to an appropriate dental professional.

Upper canine teeth are also commonly impacted. Dr. Kavand may use an examination and X-rays to assess the tooth’s position and its effect on nearby structures. Treatment may involve uncovering the tooth and, when needed, attaching a small orthodontic chain that applies gentle force to guide the canine into position.

Orthodontics FAQ

How do I schedule an initial exam? Call the office or submit an appointment request. We will collect basic information to prepare for your visit.

Will teeth need to be removed? Extraction is appropriate in some cases, but modern orthodontic options allow most patients to be treated without removing teeth.

How long does treatment take? Timing depends on individual needs. Treatment commonly ranges from 12 to 30 months, with an average of about 22 months for braces.

How much does treatment cost? We provide an estimate after examining your smile and determining the recommended treatment. We will also review payment options and available insurance benefits.

Do braces hurt? Some temporary soreness can occur when braces are placed or adjusted, but most visits do not cause significant discomfort.

Can I play sports? Yes. We recommend wearing a mouthguard during sports to protect your teeth and braces.

Should I continue seeing my family dentist? Yes. Routine dental cleanings remain important throughout orthodontic treatment.

Is it too late for braces as an adult? No. Adults can benefit from orthodontic care, and treatment can be planned around adult needs and lifestyles.

Are there foods to avoid? Avoid ice, sticky foods, hard candy, and other foods that can damage braces. Following the team’s instructions helps prevent broken appliances and treatment delays.
